Practical Tips

Great little book. The sheer number of tips may seem overwhelming, but there is an underlying theme for many of them: take an interest in others. We're all too familiar with those people who tend to turn the attention on themselves in a conversation. One uppers. People using a conversation as a sounding board or a soapbox. Then there are those who fail to connect anything they're saying with us. It's like taking turns bowling, where we each wait politely for our chance to make an utterance that does nothing to move the conversation forward. We're just treading water until it's time to climb out of the pool (and run home).
Then there are those magic people, wizards who exude some magic aura. You want to be near these people. What's their secret?
As Lowndes relates in an anecdote, when she reflected on a particularly enjoyable conversation, the author realized her interlocutor had kept the attention on her. Without even knowing it at the time, Lowndes had been at the center of attention. Not because she was seeking it necessarily, but because the person she was talking to focused on Lowndes.
Perhaps this review is losing coherence at this point...so let me summarize my experience.
Reading this book made me realize the following:
1)confident people don't need to prove themselves to others in a conversation; they can keep the attention on others
2)I'm guilty of many of the donts in this book
3)like anything in life, talent helps, but anyone can develop these skills through practice and self monitoring.
Great book, but remember you got to actually try some of these tips. Practicing one a day and keeping a journal of it might help.

wonderful book of great wisdom to anyone with slight social issues

I was desperate, but skeptical when I ordered this book. Ever since becoming a member of an editorial team at my high school, I've encountered countless moments when I JUST can't seem to communicate on a personal level with the rest of the staff members, who were all a grade above me.
Yes. I felt timid every time I spoke to the editors, and despite how much I wanted to talk to them, I couldn't even make it past a thirty second conversation. And after I accidentally goofed on our FIRST release? Oh god none of them even bothered to talk to me after that... And I felt way too threatened to try to start a conversation. So the result was this: I suffered from becoming the social outcast because of a pretty bad first impression.....
After reading the book, I understood why.
1) I abused the Quick-smiles that were mentioned as shallow in the first chapter. I would flash a smile that immediately disappear after three seconds (or less). I'm now working on the "flowing smile" technique :D :)
2) I simply had 0 skills in making small conversations. Usually the small talks end with me or the listener just running off with a "Oh I've gotta go now"
3) It was my specialty to ask overly obvious questions and make the most awkward comments at the worst times.....
4) The "instant history" technique was something I never used despite the various circumstances I catch myself in.
5) I fidgeted a lot and gave embarrassed smiles when I wasn't feeling embarrassed.
6) technique #88, "my goof your gain" was something I really should have used to ease the tension.....
well darn it. I'll just keep trying with this book's help. :D

Tricks work for real !!!

i purchased this book looking to improve my communication skills. i took several training and workshops about communication skills and i can say that this book has a nice added value. here are some points i appreciate it about the book and i hope they will help you decide to get the book or not:
1- Structured: from the begging you feel that the author is guiding you one step at the time. There are different aspects of the communication and each aspect has a specific set of skills to learn
2- Easy and Fun to read: since i started reading the book, i had the feeling that the author is setting next to me and telling me all these fun stories in a friendly way
3- Examples: The author gives real life examples to help you understand how to apply each skills
4- Accessible for All
This book is a fun and interesting book, you will finish it in few days and by the end you wish you can start over
